Getting started with Dogecoin
What actually is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin is a special online cryptocurrency that is based on the 'doge' internet phenomenon (that yellow dog). Dogecoin is based off bitcoin (you've probably heard about it in the news), so it is very similar. Dogecoin allows you to transfer amounts of this currency (DOGE) to other people accross the world! Just like many other cryptocurrencys, dogecoin is entirely decentralised and therefore isn't controlled by a single person or a group of people.
- Dogecoin is based off the "doge" internet meme
- The currency unit is called DOGE (e.g. 10doge)
- It is common to have more than 100 DOGE (unlike bitcoin)
- Dogecoin is decentralised
- Dogecoin is anonymous (if used correctly)
- You can store dogecoins offline
Dogecoin Wallet (send and receive dogecoin!)
You can download Dogecoin from here.
The dogecoin wallet allows you to send and receive dogecoin accross the dogecoin network! Once dogecoin has been installed, you will receive a special unique "address" which After opening the dogecoin-qt program, it can take a few minutes for it to sync with the rest of the Dogecoin network. After launching dogecoin:
After you're connected to the Dogecoin network and have synced the blocks:
Once you've shared your address, and somebody sends some dogecoin:
Enjoy sending dogecoin to others!
Dogecoin Mining (start making dogecoin!)
What is mining?
Anyone can start making dogecoin! In order to make dogecoin, you have to begin "mining". Mining is a name given to a process which involves various techniques but simply results in dogecoin being made and also helps verify that other people's dogecoin transactions are valid.
Here's a short video explaining what bitcoin mining is (everything in the video is the same for dogecoin, except that dogecoin is designed in a way where ASICs cannot exist).
How to start mining dogecoin?
Step 1 - Download mining software
You can download the CPU and AMD mining software below. It is reccomended to use your graphics card (GPU) to mine because it is usually more powerful. Please bare in mind that you need a miner with "scrypt", cgminer 3.7.2 was the last version to support -scrypt.
Step 2 - Become a member of a mining pool
To help mine faster and receive your dogecoin, you should join a pool where you mine with others! Once you've found a pool, register with your username, email, password and pin. Be sure to use different passwords for different pools! Some pools will require you to verify via email (be sure to check spam folder), others will not.
Here is a list of some pools:
- http://teamdoge.com/*** NEW *** (help share)
Step 3 - Create a worker on the pool
After creating an account on a pool, goto the workers page and add a new worker. Set a username and password for the worker.
Step 4 - Configure your miner
Configuring your miner is rather easy once you know how. To do so, you are required to edit the desired .bat file (AMD or Nvidia GPU etc).
Below is how your .bat file should be configured. Edit the values in yellow.
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://doge.pooladdress:3333 -u my.worker -p mypassword --thread-concurrency 4096 -I 10 -g 1 -w 256
cudaminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://doge.pooladdress:3333 -O my.worker:mypassword
minerd -a scrypt -t 4 -s 6 -o stratum+tcp://doge.pooladdress:3333 -O my.worker:mypassword
- Replace stratum+tcp://doge.pooladdress:3333 with the address of the pool (this can be found on the pool's "Getting Started" page)
- Replace my.worker with your account username and worker username (sperated with a . )
- Replace mypassword with your worker password (not account password)
- Feel free to change, or add, numbers at the end depending on how powerful your CPU/GPU is (for GPUs refer to here for reccomended configs)
